Helicopter Itinerary & Operational Guidelines
Pahalgam Helipad Guidelines
- Passengers leaving Pahalgam after 10:00 AM will automatically receive a next-day return ticket due to the 3:00 PM cutoff time at Panjtarni Helipad.
- Flight delays and cancellations due to inclement weather are common at Pahalgam; travelers should carry extra warm clothing in case of overnight stays at Panjtarni.
- Flight Duration: Pahalgam to Panjtarni takes approximately 12 minutes.
Panjtarni & Holy Cave Journey
- From Panjtarni helipad, the Holy Cave is approximately 6 km away. Passengers are strongly advised to hire a pony or a palki (doli) rather than trekking due to the high altitude.
- Authorities Cutoff: Pilgrims are restricted from leaving Panjtarni for the Amarnath Cave after 3:00 PM for safety reasons. Arrivals after 3:00 PM must complete Darshan the following morning.
- Darshan Duration: Typically takes around 1 hour.
- Return Process: Check-in at Panjtarni operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Boarding may take 2 to 3 hours depending on queue volume.
Baggage Allowance
Each passenger is strictly limited to one piece of hand baggage weighing a maximum of 5 kilograms.
Route Details: Neelgrath vs. Baltal vs. Pahalgam
- Neelgrath (Helipad): Located 12 km from Baltal and 4 km from Sonmarg. Helicopter services for Yatris operate out of the Neelgrath government helipad. The Baltal trekking route is accessible to trekking pilgrims.
- Pahalgam: Situated at 7,200 feet above sea level, Pahalgam is the traditional trekking base camp (starting from Chandanwari, 16 miles away).
- Sonmarg: The best place to stay while utilizing the helicopter service to Amarnath Ji, offering several hotel options.
Safety Guidelines for Helicopter Travel
- Follow instructions given by the ground crew at all times.
- Secure loose items such as scarves, dupattas, caps, and glasses before boarding.
- Never approach the rear of the helicopter due to the dangerous tail rotor.
- Keep your seatbelt securely fastened throughout the flight.
- Do not touch the red emergency handles inside the cabin.
- Turn off cell phones during flight. Photography and videography from the air or on the helipad are strictly prohibited.
- Smoking, alcohol, and intoxicating substances are strictly prohibited. Passengers under the influence will be denied boarding.
Health Advisory & High Altitude Precautions
The Holy Cave is situated at an altitude of 13,500 feet. Extreme cold, low humidity, high UV radiation, and reduced oxygen levels can cause high-altitude illnesses:
- Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS): Symptoms include headaches, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and fatigue.
- High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE): Brain swelling causing confusion, vision problems, and severe weakness.
- High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE): Fluid buildup in the lungs causing severe breathing difficulty, cough, and chest tightness.
Prevention: Start physical fitness training (4–5 km walks) at least a month prior, stay hydrated, ascend slowly, and use ponies or palkis instead of trekking if you feel fatigued.
What to Wear & Carry
- Waterproof trousers and windcheaters.
- Sufficient woolen garments and thermal layers.
- A torch, raincoat, and small umbrella.
- Gloves, warm caps, and waterproof trekking shoes with good grip.
- Sunscreen, cold cream, and personal medications.
Terms & Conditions Summary
- No Refunds/Rescheduling: Once tickets are purchased, cancellations, refunds, and rescheduling are generally not permitted.
- Weight Constraints & Regrouping: Passengers may be separated across different flights due to helicopter weight and balance limits.
- Weather Disruptions: Operators are not liable for flight cancellations or delays caused by inclement weather or technical snags.
- Age Limits: Children under 13 years and senior citizens above 75 years of age are strictly prohibited from undertaking the Yatra. Pregnant women beyond 6 weeks are not allowed.
